Brooks & Done… almost.

This week, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn of Brooks & Dunn sat down with NASCAR reporter Marty Smith ahead of SEC Media Day for an interview, and Kix told an absolutely unhinged Dale Earnhardt story that had my jaw on the floor.

He recalled going on a fishing trip with Dale and their families back in the 90’s, I assume, in San Salvador, where they caught a ton of good stuff and fished all day long. By the end of the day, Kix was ready to relax and have an ice cold beer.

Dale was good friends with the 90’s superstar duo, and he even starred in the music video for their song “Honky Tonk Truth” back in 1997. They’ve told some great stories about Dale over the years, but this one… this beats all I’ve ever heard. You can read the full story HERE, but basically, they had fished all day long and Kix was over it. As they were wrapping up and cracking beers, Kix pointed out some marlins swimming along the side of the boat like dolphins, and Dale got fired up once again and made him reel one in.

He thought they were finally done after that, so he went back up to the top to sit down and finish his drink, but just about that time, Dale noticed a bunch of sea turtles in the water, and he threw the chum that had been using as bait in there for them to eat. He called Kix back down to see them, and Kix was intrigued so he got up again to go back down… but he probably shouldn’t have.

As he was looking over the boat in to the water, Dale picked him up and threw him in the ocean without warning, where he landed in the water, trying not to splash, coming up every several seconds to get air with blood all over his face. I mean, dang… I almost have no words. Not only did Dale throw him in, he then turned to their captain, Terry, and told them it was time to go.

Kix said he could hear his wife screaming “profanities” as he watched the boat get further away and much smaller. Dale decided it was funny enough and they came back to get him. Luckily, Kix came away with all of his body parts still attached:

“So I go up top, he’s got this whole bucket full of chum, bloody chum that we’ve been using for bait and whatever. He says, ‘Shut the boat down. Look at these sea turtles.’ And he dumps the chum over there. He goes, ‘Man, check this out, KB.’ Hell, I wanted to see the sea turtles. So I go sliding back down, I looked over the side, and he grabbed me by the seat of the pants and just threw me out there in that bloody water.

And I’m sure it was like a Tarantino movie, because I wouldn’t even move my legs. You know, I’m just gonna come up and get a breath. I’m sure I had blood all over my face and everything else. He says, ‘Let’s go, Terry,’ talking to the captain. They take off, I can hear my wife screaming every time I come up, you know, profanities as the boat gets smaller and smaller than the distance. Finally, you know, it was funny enough and he came back and got me and I still have most of my body parts.”

Just insane… and something only Dale Earnhardt could get away with, truly.

You just have to listen to Kix tell it himself… it’s unbelievable. I thought it was a joke when he first started telling it, but it’s a completely true story:

And his son Dale Earnhardt Jr. was asked about the story on the Ask Jr. segment of his podcast today, and he and all the guys in the room were floored by it, with Dale Jr. had seemingly never heard the story before.

He laughed in disbelief as he talked about how his dad had Terry, the captain, drive away, and said it was “some bulls***” that his dad did that, adding that it was obviously a “criminal offense” either way but he hoped it was embellished some:

“They drove away… they drove away. Like, what if something really did happen? Holy s***. Damn. That’s some bulls***. That is some bulls***, dad. I mean, if that story is absolutely true as told, I would be f****** furious…

I think he embellished. He’s embellishing some. I mean, let’s be serious here, it’s still a criminal offense. But, you know…”

I think we all had a very similar reaction to the story, and I myself was trying to figure out how much of it was actually true because it sounds too crazy to fully believe, honestly. It’s one of the most insane Dale Sr. stories I’ve ever heard, and I’ve heard a lot of them at this point.

It’s funny to hear Dale Jr.’s thoughts on it, though, especially considering he’s often the one telling the crazy stories about his dad:

And if you’ve never seen the “Honky Tonk Truth” music video before, it’s high time to change that. The description says it’s without Dale Sr., but he’s definitely there… and looks strikingly similar to Kix, actually:
