A song about being American released on Independence Day.
Colby Acuff has done it again with his newest single, “Average American.” Most people see this song’s title paired with a 4th of July release date and might think that it will scream patriotism like a Toby Keith tune. But given that Acuff is known for diving deep and writing about the sometimes harsh realities of the world, a song to scream while chugging beers is not what Acuff delivered this Independence Day.
Colby Acuff is highlighting the American dream, or what it’s reality looks like. It’s no secret that being a young adult in today’s world is not always the most glamorous. Folks are in debt, falling out of love, and getting divorced, renting forever because owning a house is not as achievable for some in today’s society.
“My new song, ‘Average American, ‘ is out now! Give it a listen today and I hope you have a great 4th of July!”
Penned with Chandler Brown, Holden James, and Noah Gunderson, “Average American” details the sometimes mundane feelings that your average middle-class person might experience during their day-to-day life. Acuff tells the story of a husband and wife settling into their lives of raising kids and working, and at times, they both wonder how they ended up in this position versus the life they had imagined for themselves.
“Spend sixty thousand dollars on degrees we don’t use
Yeah, you never see it coming ’til it’s happening to you
Then all of the sudden, out of the red, white, and blue
You’re an average American
Another stick-figure family packed in a mini van
Maxing out our credit cards to go to Disneyland
When the kids grow up, maybe we can lеarn to fall in love again
And be averagе Americans”
This song resonates deeply with me because I think everyone has, at times, questioned the trajectory of their life, wondering how they ended up in certain situations. The American dream looks a lot different today than it did a decade ago, and I think this song captures the feeling that many young adults feel today.
Colby Acuff struck gold with this tune. Happy 4th of July, everyone.
