Quite the balloon budget at the University of North Carolina.
The addition of the legendary Bill Belichick as head coach was supposed to take UNC to new heights. Instead, the Tarheels football team hit a new low in 2025, and Bill’s college squad was one of the worst in the FBS. They finished with a record of 4-8, and only Virginia Tech, Boston College and Syracuse were worse than them in the ACC.
In case you need a reminder, North Carolina’s first game of the year against TCU was highly anticipated, and there were a lot of eyeballs on Belichick’s return to college football. They ended being embarrassed 48-10 by the Horned Frogs (on their home field) back on September 1, and this was what Bill had to say immediately after:
Okay, I wasn’t showing you a post-game press conference from over four months ago just to rehash what Bill Belichick had to say. Instead, I’ve included that because I want you to really take a look at that decorative, over-the-top balloon arch that’s planted behind the UNC head coach.
Hilariously, if I might add, because they had just gotten blown out and that balloon decoration reads more “baby shower at a fancy country club” than it does “college football presser.”
Believe it or not, that specific balloon arch cost the football program around $800. That 25-foot decoration is around $27 a foot, and UNC opted for the starburst balloon upgrade. So put that together with the installation and delivery fee that their balloon supplier – GingerPopBalloons – charges and it comes out to that just-shy-of-1K price.
Here’s a peak of other things the balloon company took care of for the University of North Carolina:
Many thought that Belichick’s much younger girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, was the one behind the balloon installation. However, a report from FOIAball.com revealed that a number of DI football programs spend a whole lot of moolah on temporary, pop-able money pits balloon decorations.
UNC’s football program spent a whopping $48,733 dollars on balloons during the 2024-2025 season, which just seems absurd, does it not? Who knew there was such a market for fancy balloon arches and other, artistic balloon pieces? And that was before Bill even got there… I’d imagine that the number went north of $50,000 during his tenure.
I guess you’ve got to have a lot of fun decorations around to distract from the figurative program crumbling down in embarrassing and humiliating fashion. Think about all of the storylines that came from UNC this year. All of the Jordon Hudson stuff, the Tarheels backing out of an in-season TV show, the reports that Bill was looking for a way out… it was all a mess. But at least they had some pretty, eye-catching balloon garlands.
And if you think that spending almost $50,000 on inflatable plastic is a lot, the entire athletics department at the University of Texas apparently spent over $170,000 on balloons for 2024-25. Good to see that all of this money in college sports is going to the important stuff, eh? Can’t think of any other place that kind of cash could go towards…The post Bill Belichick & The UNC Football Program Spent An Absurd Amount Of Money On Balloons This Year first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
