Want to live well into your 100’s? You might want to listen to this WWII veteran.

Leslie Lemon recently celebrated his 106th birthday on July 1, and anyone that’s lived that much life has to have some words of wisdom to pass on to the rest of us. The man from Aylesbury, England – who served as a corporal in World War II – has been alive since 1919.

In other words, he’s lived through a whole lot of historical events, and he insists that his long life can be credited to one food item that not many people would probably think of as a super food. What’s that food item, you might be asking? Fortunately for us, Lemon was happy to share that with the world (through SWNS):

“The secret to a long life is custard. Rhubarb from the garden and custard. I eat it every day. I prefer it cold. It’s nice in a trifle. You can’t beat it.

I usually have the powder but I’ve got a ready made Ambrosia in the pantry for emergencies. You should always have a pudding.”

Custard, eh? If I had a guess for every year that Leslie Lemon has been on this Earth, I still don’t think I would have ever landed on custard.

But hey, if a guy who has been retired now for longer than he ever worked says that custard is the key to a long live, I guess I need to add that into my diet. Lemon says that he prefers his custard cold, so I’m thinking I could even take it a step further and just get on a frozen custard regimen.

Clearly it’s working for Lemon, who says he’s healthy as ever and doesn’t feel like he’s 106-years-old:

“I don’t feel older at all. I’ve got no aches and pains. I don’t take any tablets or medications. I never see a doctor.”

Sign me up for that kind of aging.

The WWII veteran went on to say that another key to living a long time and having a high quality of life is to practice self-control with certain things… and to try your best to stay up with the latest trends and technology:

“Everything in moderation. I’m so lucky and I’m quite happy. The thing that has changed the most is video calls. I can’t work it myself. I’m a bit old fashioned.”

I’d say the great-great-grandfather-of-two not being able to work a FaceTime call is completely okay (and expected). But he does try his best to stay very connected with his great-great grandchildren, his great-grandchildren, his grandchildren, and his own kids that are in their 70s.

Though the main goal of Lemon’s every day life is to get his custard fix in. And that’s become a little bit easier as of late, since the British superstore Asda donated a year’s supply of custard to the 106-year-old man. A spokesperson for the store was overjoyed to play a part in Leslie Lemon’s story, and had this to say about their donation:

“We’ll all be taking a leaf out of Mr Lemon’s book and enjoying more custard going forward, we hope he enjoys a free year’s supply on us. When life gives you lemons, add custard!”

Hey Siri… go ahead and put custard on the shopping list for the foreseeable future.
