Two Reportedly Hospitalized After Fire At The Home Of NASCAR Driver Denny Hamlin’s Parents
What a terrible offseason for the NASCAR community.
Of course the entire NASCAR family is still shocked and mourning the tragic loss of retired Cup Series driver Greg Biffle, who passed away along with his wife, two children, and three others in a plane crash in North Carolina on December 18.
But now, it appears that another NASCAR driver is experiencing a horrific situation – although thankfully it sounds like everyone made it out of this one alive.
According to WSOC in Charlotte, two people were hospitalized after a fire at a home in Stanley, North Carolina on Sunday evening. And according to neighbors, the home belongs to the parents of Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin.
The local news station reports that fire officials would not confirm the owners or residents of the home, but property records show that it’s owned by Dennis and Mary Lou Hamlin, the parents of the driver of the #11 car for Joe Gibbs Racing and co-owner of 23XI Racing.
According to Chief David Toomey of the Lucia-Riverbend Fire Department, the house was nearly halfway gone by the time they got to the scene – and efforts to extinguish the blaze were made more difficult by the fact that there were no fire hydrants in the area:
“Well this house was about 40-45% involved when we got here. Of course where we are located there are no hydrants, so all the water had to be trucked in and there were times we would run out of water and we had to wait for more water to get here. We had to call for more, additional tankers throughout the county.”
Luckily it sounds like everybody survived, with officials reporting that two people were outside the home when crews arrived. Both were immediately rushed to the hospital, though it’s not confirmed whether it was Hamlin’s parents who were home or hospitalized during the blaze.
