Is ‘Mayor Of Kingstown’ Taylor Sheridan’s Most Underrated Show?

Season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown just concluded on December 28, and fans are already asking for more of the Taylor Sheridan series.

At this point, it’s beyond safe to say that Sheridan doesn’t miss. He’s got one hell of a track record with Yellowstone and all of its spinoffs, and if you happen to like Taylor Sheridan shows outside of the Yellowstone universe, Landman for example, more of those are on the way in the next year.

It’s no secret that Taylor Sheridan has a large fanbase that follows him to whatever show he’s behind. Personally, I think one factor that fans especially love is that Sheridan keeps his shows on a regular schedule, releasing new seasons every single year (with the exception of Yellowstone). That’s huge in an age where other programs have two or even three year gaps between seasons.

Looking at you, Stranger Things.

It’s almost unfathomable to think about how many plates Sheridan currently has spinning, and how he continues to churn out hit after hit even with his scheduled departure from Paramount to NBC in a couple of years. His smash-hit Landman is currently airing it’s highly anticipated second season, and in case you didn’t know, his wildly underrated Mayor of Kingstown series just aired it’s Season 4 finale last night… and it was spectacular.

Mayor Of Kingstown

If you’re not familiar, the show stars Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky, and follows the McLusky family in Kingstown, Michigan – a city where prison is the only real industry. Acting as the mediators between the street gangs, prisoners, guards, cops and politicians, the McLusky family battles to keep the peace in Kingstown, and has done so for decades.

Believe it or not, a press release stated that Mayor of Kingstown was the top series on Paramount+ during its third season, yet not everyone knows about it. It just doesn’t get the press that Landman or Tulsa Kings gets. It also has the lowest critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a shame because just this official synopsis for Season 4 alone would probably get even the casual TV fan to give it a shot:

“Mike’s control over Kingstown is threatened as new players compete to fill the power vacuum left in the Russians’ wake, compelling him to confront the resulting gang war and stop them from swallowing the town, meanwhile, with those he loves in more danger than ever before, Mike must contend with a headstrong new warden to protect his own while grappling with demons from his past.”

Now, I don’t want to spoil anything in case you haven’t gotten to Season 4 (or to any of the show at all). But all I will tell you is that some cast additions for Season 4 really lifted Mayor of Kingstown to a whole other level. Edie Falco (The Sopranos), Lennie James (Fear The Walking Dead) and Laura Benanti (Younger) were all added to the show as series regulars for this latest season, and they did not disappoint.

In fact, the only disappointment that fans are feeling is that Season 4 has run out of episodes, and there’s yet to be an order for Season 5. Considering the creators of the show have said they have a “seven season plan,” and the overall performance of the series on Paramount+, I’d bet that it does return for a fifth season.

But until then, fans are going to anxiously wait for an official renewal. Judging by all of the praise the show is getting online, it’d be surprising to see Paramount+ let Mayor of Kingstown end with Season 4.

Is it Taylor Sheridan’s most underrated show? I think it’s safe to say that it is…
