Randy Travis Has Precious Reaction To Receiving Custom Wheelchair With “Three Wooden Crosses” For Christmas
Just precious.
Today, Randy Travis, or probably someone on his team, shared an adorable video of him receiving a very special, custom Christmas gift.
His wife, Mary, got him a one-of-a-kind wheelchair with three wooden crosses painted on the back, which is of course a reference to his classic hit, “Three Wooden Crosses.”
Written by Kim Williams and Doug Johnson, the song was released as a single in November of 2002 from his Rise and Shine album. A song about tragedy, redemption and faith that endures, it’s easily one of his most recognizable songs and a country music classic.
And because the song resonated so widely and so deeply with a variety of different people, it even cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at #31. It was Randy’s 16th chart-topping hit, the first since his 1994 hit “Whisper My Name,” and ultimately become his final #1 single.
It also won him the CMA for Song of the Year in 2003, as well as a Dove Award from the Gospel Music Association as Country Song of the Year in 2004.
As a poor old country boy from Marshville, North Carolina, who has certainly had his own fair share of public struggles and hardships over his very successful decades-long career in country music, it’s hard to put into words just how important this song is for Randy’s career and what it means to so many people.
And there’s no telling how much it has impacted countless lives throughout the world, and for me personally, it holds a very special place in my heart like I’m sure it does many of yours.
Randy suffered a devastating stroke in 2013, a complication of viral cardiomyopathy, which damaged the part of his brain controlling speech and mobility, leaving him with significant aphasia and paralysis on his right side. He’s made progress over the years, learning to walk and speak again with extensive therapy, and he can walk short distances and speak a little bit, which is incredible considering his injuries. You’ve probably seen the awesome videos of him singing the last “Amen” of his other classic, “Forever And Ever, Amen.”
It’s so tragic that such an incredible, iconic country music voice was taken away in such a horrible way, but Travis has managed to keep his music alive and still makes public appearances often. Earlier this year, he even released a new song using AI, which is a discussion for another time, but you can read more about it HERE.
When fans see him out in public, Randy is always in a wheelchair, so it’s really cool that he will have this special part of his career with him at all times now:
“We surprised Randy on Christmas, and he LOVES his new custom wheelchair with Three Wooden Crosses!”
His reaction is priceless, and I’m sure fans will love seeing him use it as much as he will enjoy using it and remembering such a great part of his life which has impacted so many people all over the world.
