Stephen A. Smith Suggests Alabama Should Fire Head Coach Kalen DeBoer & Hire Deion Sanders

Pretty wild theory from Stephen A. Smith here … let’s see how it shakes out.

There’s no one that talks more about sports than Stephen A. Smith. He does get paid a lot of money to do so, but one might think that Smith could get a little burnt out blabbering about sports around the clock like he does. At the very least, the quantity of content that he puts out sometimes has to mean there’s a lack of quality (lack of factualness might be a better way of putting it).

Think about it… the man is on ESPN around the clock talking about every sport under the sun. Football game on? He’s there to talk about it. Basketball game that just wrapped up? He’s there breaking down the game (and yelling about something). Add on the fact that he’s a certified hot take machine and you’ve got yourself one of the busiest personalities in all of sports.

Earlier this week, Stephen A. Smith certainly had the hot takes flying when SEC football was the topic at hand on First Take. As you likely already know, most sports shows only talk about three things: the Dallas Cowboys, Alabama football, and whether or not LeBron James is better than Michael Jordan.

In this episode of First Take, Smith was talking with Paul Finebaum about SEC coaches, and Stephen A. suggested that Deion Sanders could have (and should have) been hired by a team in the Southeastern Conference. He then proceeded to basically go through every school in the SEC, before really honing in on the Crimson Tide:

“Just imagine if he were in Tuscaloosa. What if, instead of DeBoer, it was him coaching Alabama.”

Yeah… what if Alabama had hired Deion Sanders after he posted a losing record at Colorado? Instead of head coach Kalen DeBoer, who had just taken his Washington team to the national championship game?

First and foremost, there’s no doubt that Deion Sanders is a good coach, and an even better person (we saw that on display recently). But in Deion’s first season at Colorado, he led the team to a 4-8 record in the PAC-12. His second season saw the Buffaloes finish 9-4 in the Big-12. Though that’s a huge improvement from one year to the next… a 9-4 record in the SEC puts you on the hot seat as a head coach. Especially at Alabama.

Still, Stephen A. Smith thinks that Alabama hiring “Prime Time” would have been the right move:

“I’m not sold on DeBoer. I know he did a great job at Washington. They miss Nick Saban in Alabama. When you don’t have him, you can’t have someone that brings a finesse style of game to Alabama. That’s meat and potatoes y’all.

We didn’t see that with DeBoer. I thought they were considerably softer. I’m not going to lie to you. I wouldn’t mind at all if Alabama changed course and brought in someone like ‘Prime Time’ (Sanders) to Alabama. That would’ve been spectacular.”

There’s actually no way to know if it would have been spectacular. Maybe it would have been a splashy hire on paper? Is that what Stephen A. is saying?

Smith went on to say that Alabama should still be keeping their eye on Deion Sanders as a head coach, and suggested that if Alabama has another lackluster year in the SEC (for their standards), it might be time to call “Prime Time” and offer him the head coaching job:

“I think it is something they should still consider down the line if this season is a repeat of last season.”

Gotta love Stephen A. Smith… always spewing the hot takes. The post Stephen A. Smith Suggests Alabama Should Fire Head Coach Kalen DeBoer & Hire Deion Sanders first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
