A music streaming service will soon introduce the ability for users to direct message one another through their platform? What could go wrong?

One of the many great joys in life is being able to share music that you find with your friends. There’s no better feeling than discovering a new band or song and sending it to someone for them to listen to for the first time. Music truly is a remarkable connector in life.

And the music streaming platform known as Spotify is now trying to capitalize on those connections – and potentially keep them from happening elsewhere. Spotify says they are in no way, shape or form trying to replace sharing music through other messaging apps like text and WhatsApp or social media sites like Facebook and Instagram… but it kind of seems like they are.

Certainly appears that someone at Spotify thought, “Hey, why are we letting Spotify links be sent out every which way when we could just keep it in house?” So soon, users (free and premium) that are aged 16 years and older will be able to send messages and song suggestions back and forth without leaving the Spotify app, as the company explained:

“Spotify users have told us they want a dedicated space within the app to share songs, podcasts, or audiobooks they’re excited about with friends and family, and an easy way to keep track of recommendations. For artists, authors, and creators, easier sharing means more word-of-mouth recommendations and helps create new fans.

Our goal is to give users what they want and make those moments of connection more seamless and streamlined in the Spotify app. That’s why, beginning this week, Messages will start rolling out to Free and Premium users aged 16 years and older in select markets on mobile devices.”

Just another messaging outlet that parent’s have to keep an eye on/worry about. At least it’s only for those 16 years and older.

In theory, the idea seems fine. Nothing wrong with making it easier to send and share music with your friends. But in terms of online comedy, the announcement from Spotify has been an absolute gold mine for memes:
