Sherrone Moore Detained By Police, Taken Into Custody After Being Fired By Michigan For Inappropriate Relationship With Staffer

That got dark fast…

A bombshell hit the college football world this afternoon when the University of Michigan announced that they were firing head coach Sherrone Moore, who took over the program in 2024 after Jim Harbaugh departed for the NFL (amidst a cheating scandal).

Moore went 9-3 this season after a disappointing 8-5 season in 2024 (but they beat Ohio State so it didn’t really matter), so it’s not like he was exactly on the hot seat. But as it turns out Michigan’s decision had nothing to do with his performance on the field and was because of what he was doing in the bedroom.

According to a statement from Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, Moore is being fired for cause after allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a female staffer for the Wolverines football team

“Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a university investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”

Moore has been married to his wife, Kelli, for a decade, and the couple have three children together.

Now, there have been rumors flying around for weeks that this was coming, and there’s all kinds of speculation and “inside sources” providing more details about what allegedly happened. But all we know right know is that Moore is out, and Michigan will be searching for a new coach, at a time when most of the head coaching vacancies have been filled and there aren’t a ton of coaches on the market anymore.

Unfortunately though, some disturbing news came out of Michigan after it was announced that Moore had been fired, when it was reported that Moore was detained by police in Saline, Michigan and turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department “for investigation into potential charges.”

There are plenty of rumors flying around about what happened, but as of right now I haven’t seen anything confirmed by a credible source so I’m not comfortable reporting it. Once it’s confirmed, we’ll have an update for you, but just suffice it to say that it doesn’t sound good and as of right now it’s been confirmed that he’s still in custody.

The whole thing is obviously a lot more serious than a college football coach getting fired. Hopefully Moore gets whatever help he needs and is able to bounce back.

In the meantime, Michigan has announced that associate head coach Biff Poggi has been named the interim head coach. Michigan is scheduled to face the Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl on December 31.

Moore has been at Michigan since 2018 when he joined Harbaugh’s staff as tight ends coach, before eventually being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023. That season he served as acting head coach while Harbaugh was suspended for his role in the sign-stealing scandal.
