Arsenal are on the verge of completing their first major signing of the summer, with CNN Portugal reporting that a deal has been struck to bring Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres to North London. The 27-year-old Swedish international will reportedly join the Gunners in a deal worth a fixed €65 million, with a further €15 million in add-ons that could push the total fee to €80 million.
The structure of the deal includes €5 million in relatively straightforward performance-based bonuses, such as appearance milestones in an Arsenal shirt. The remaining €10 million would rely on more ambitious achievements — including Arsenal winning the UEFA Champions League or Gyökeres winning the Ballon d’Or.
The news has since been backed up by the likes of David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano.
This news ends any lingering hope for Sporting fans that Gyökeres would stay for another season. The powerful forward only joined the Portuguese club last summer from Coventry City, but his remarkable form — including 29 goals and 9 assists in the league — has made him one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers.
Arsenal had been heavily linked with a move for Bejamin Sesko over the last year, but it appears Gyokeres is the chosen one.
Gyökeres is expected to add a new dimension to Arsenal’s frontline, offering Mikel Arteta a prolific, physical presence capable of leading the line or combining in fluid attacking patterns. His signing could also spark further moves at the Emirates as Arsenal look to strengthen ahead of another title challenge and a return to Champions League football.
This move also signals the growing influence of new transfer chief Andrea Berta, who has taken the lead on high-stakes negotiations this summer.
