Match Preview
Luis Enrique's Ligue 1 champions delivered the decisive blow just four minutes in with the boot of Dembele, who tied Kylian Mbappe's record for the most Champions League goal contributions by a PSG player in a single season.
In some ways, the first leg between Arsenal and PSG was similar to the Gunners' quarterfinal second leg against Real Madrid, but this time, the Premier League powerhouses were making all the pre-game noise and failing to deliver on the field.
Les Parisiens were the clear favorites to secure a Munich encounter with either Barcelona or Inter Milan when PSG returned across the English Channel with a slim but potentially valuable 1-0 lead in their semi-final, thanks to a goal disallowed by Mikel Merino.
Enrique watched a 2-1 Ligue 1 loss to Liam Rosenior's Strasbourg over the weekend. The hosts have only ever been eliminated from a European knockout match after winning the first leg away from home, although that did happen against English opposition in the form of Manchester United in 2018–19.
Although the outcome adds to Les Parisiens' poor run of play—they have now lost three and won just two of their previous six games in all competitions—Enrique, predictably, fielded a second-string squad over the weekend, which is more than the men in red and white can claim.
With the majority of their key players rested, Arsenal experienced a similar fate as PSG, who lost 2-1 in league play. Bournemouth was the most recent team to take advantage of the Gunners' woeful defensive shortcomings after taking the lead.
Arsenal took the lead in the first half thanks to a striker's run and finish from Declan Rice, but Mikel Arteta's team lost points from a winning position in a Premier League game for the tenth time this season, setting a new unwanted club record. Dean Huijsen's header and Evanilson's bundled finish turned the tide for the Cherries.
A touch of handball, or "elbowball," was present in Evanilson's victory, but the Gooners could not claim that their team received what they deserved following yet another pathetic offensive display that still puts them in danger of finishing below the top five in the English Premier League.
Spurs will be reluctant to offer their worst enemy any advice on thrilling away comebacks, but only two teams have ever advanced from a Champions League semi-final after losing the first leg at home: Ajax against Panathinaikos in 1996 and fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur against the former in 2019.
However, there is some hope for the Gunners as they visit the French capital as part of a seven-game winning streak away from home in all competitions. They have won all four of their previous European road games and scored at least two goals each time.
Arsenal would have a chance to save themselves in extra time if they were to defeat Real Madrid 2-1 again at the Bernabeu, but because PSG has scored an incredible 14 goals in their past three Champions League home wins, it is not unreasonable to blame the Gooners for once again dreading the worst in Europe.
