Will this one be on MM3?
Megan Moroney fans are delving deep into the archives, bringing some of her older, unreleased gems back to the surface. Moroney, like many other artists, has a list of songs that are in the vault, which may have been shared with fans via acoustic social media videos or on YouTube, but have not been released to fans through formal studio recordings. When fans find these gems, it often leads to pleas from them hoping that it will be released sooner rather than later.
While one of Moroney’s beloved unreleased tunes, “Wedding Dress,” has been confirmed to appear on her next record, another one that fans are hoping will also make the cut is “Leave Me Alone.”
In 2021, Moroney released the song on her YouTube channel, but has not yet formally released a studio version of the song. In the YouTube video, she shared that the song was inspired by her best friend: her mother.
“‘Leave Me Alone’ is probably one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written. I cried the first time playing it through when I wrote it back in 2020. My mom is my best friend, and I quite literally don’t think I could function without her.
I went through the typical teenage stage where I thought I was capable of being independent and doubted her advice. As I got older, I realized just how much I need her love, guidance and wisdom. I wasn’t sure what project this song would fit on, but I wanted to share it here with y’all because it’s so special to me.
I love you, Mom. I know Grandma is watching over us. Happy Mother’s Day.”
The deeply personal song highlights how the relationship you have with your parents changes as you age. You go from fighting back with their wishes and being a definite teenager to needing them on an emotional level and finding yourself reaching out to them more frequently.
“I said mama just leave me alone
I get its a big world and you care but let me go
I can do this on my own
Your little girl is all grown up
So mama leave me alone
It was my second year of college
And I couldn’t stop calling
Cause you had answers to everything
And I couldn’t work that washing machine
I guess you always knew it all
You made my problems seem so small…”
While this song applies to how relationships shift with both sets of parents, whether you’re closer to your mother or father, it does strike a chord, making you appreciate the sacrifices that your mother specifically makes. As a girl, there are specific topics that you run to your mother for, whether it’s a boy who broke your heart or something else. As we age and grow in our wisdom, our brain suddenly shifts to reject that stubborn desire for independence, and go back to seeking out those wise words from our moms.
While the song has been in the digital space for years, it’s experiencing a resurgence on TikTok. Many young women are using the song, posting videos and images on social media that feature pictures of their mothers or show them with teary eyes, accompanied by captions expressing their gratitude for their mothers.

I know this song makes me choke up every time I hear it, and scrolling through the TikTok videos tugged at my heartstrings, too. If Megan Moroney puts “Leave Me Alone” and “Wedding Dress” on this next record, I’m going to be the ultimate emo cowgirl.
