Group travel etiquette: do’s and don’ts on tour
When you travel with G Adventures, you’re joining a small group of like-minded travellers who want to explore the world together

G Adventures keeps groups small (generally about 10 to 12 travellers and never more than 16 on our land tours) to foster camaraderie among new friends so that it’s easier to connect with one another and with the local communities we visit. It’s about more than just seeing the sights; it’s about sharing experiences, making memories, and forming friendships that last long after the trip is over.
Being mindful of time, space, and one another’s needs keeps things running smoothly and makes the journey more enjoyable for all. It’s also about showing respect when we’re immersed in different cultures. Paying attention to local customs and being considerate helps us connect more authentically with the places we visit. In the end, our small-group trips are all about cooperation, respect, and openness. With good etiquette, we create a positive group vibe and make the cultural experience richer for everyone.
Why etiquette matters on group tours
It keeps the group running smoothly. Being on time and considerate helps avoid delays and keeps the adventure stress-free for everyone, including your lovely Chief Experience Officers (CEOs)!
It creates a positive group vibe. Small groups work best when everyone is respectful, open, and supportive of one another.
It makes travel more enjoyable for everyone. Kindness and patience go a long way when spending lots of time together.
It encourages cultural respect. Being mindful of local customs shows appreciation and helps us connect more authentically with communities.
It builds stronger connections. Thoughtful behaviour helps turn fellow travellers into friends.
Group travel do’s
Because we travel closely as a group, a little etiquette goes a long way.
On time, all the time
When you’re part of a group, everyone’s time matters. Showing up on time for meetups, activities, and departures helps the day run smoothly and avoids keeping the whole group waiting. Plus, it means more time for fun and less time stressing about schedules.
Communication is key
If you’re running late, feeling unwell, or want to skip an activity, let your CEO or a fellow traveller know. Clear communication keeps everyone on the same page and avoids unnecessary worry or confusion. It also helps the group adjust if needed — all you need to do is say.
Respect personal space
Travelling together doesn’t mean being together 24/7. Some people need quiet moments to recharge their batteries, and that’s completely fine. Respecting personal space allows everyone to enjoy the trip in their own way, whether that’s by joining every group outing and being the life of the party or taking a little downtime to rest before the next big adventure.
Stay flexible
Travel often comes with surprises: weather shifts, traffic delays, or spontaneous opportunities. A flexible mindset keeps the mood light and helps the group embrace the unexpected as part of the adventure, rather than letting small changes cause frustration.
Lend a helping hand
Little acts of kindness go a long way on group trips. Offering to take someone’s photo, helping with luggage, or sharing a snack creates a sense of camaraderie. These gestures may seem small, but they help build connections and friendships that can last long after the last travel day.
Group travel don'ts
Keep the vibes good on a group tour by avoiding these behaviours.
Don’t be rigid
Group travel works best when everyone is flexible. Overplanning your own agenda or resisting the group’s flow can throw off the vibe for everyone. Remember that unexpected moments often turn into the best memories, so try to roll with it and enjoy the journey as it unfolds.
Don’t disrespect local traditions
When we visit new places, we’re guests. That means following local customs, whether it’s dressing modestly, asking permission before taking photos, or learning a few polite phrases in the local language. Showing respect helps us connect more authentically and leaves a positive impression on the communities we visit.
Don’t be OTT
Shared spaces like hotels, buses, and restaurants are more enjoyable when everyone is mindful. Keeping noise down, cleaning up after yourself, and being considerate in group settings help everyone feel comfortable and have an unforgettable trip.
Don’t be negative
Every trip has its bumps: late buses, rainy days, or missed connections. But negativity drags down the group energy. If something truly needs fixing or you have a problem with the itinerary, an activity, or another traveller, quietly bring it up with your CEO. Otherwise, try to focus on the positives and make the best of the moment.
Don’t skip shared costs
Splitting bills and tipping fairly keeps things smooth and drama-free. Everyone is contributing to the experience, so chipping in when it’s time to cover group costs is part of being a good travel companion. A little fairness goes a long way toward keeping the trip fun for all.
Quick tips: preparing for a group tour
– Read your itinerary. It’s like the cheat sheet to the trip and saves you from being the one asking, “Wait, what are we doing today?” five times.
– Pack light. Remember that you’re joining an adventure, not moving to a new house. Your back and the group will thank you.
– Know what’s included. Having an understanding of which activities and meals cost extra saves unexpected surprises for everyone.
– Expect diverse personalities. Every group has all kinds: the early riser, the foodie, the napper… and that’s half the fun.
– Keep it quiet when needed. Save the karaoke voice for a night out, not the hotel hallway.
– Bring an open mind. The best memories often come from unexpected plans, unusual foods, or quirky new friends.
– Group travel comes down to balance. Show kindness, stay flexible, and enjoy the ride. When everyone does their part, the whole group benefits, and the experience becomes more fun, relaxed, and meaningful. On a G Adventures trip, these little acts of consideration don’t just make the journey smoother; they turn it into something unforgettable.
