Five decades ago, Steve Miller Band released “Fly Like an Eagle” before the track soared into our hearts (and hoops) 20 years later in Space Jam. Now, the ageless synth-funk anthem has been revisited by GRiZ, who turned the clock back to 1976 by dropping a brand-new remix.
Released today, the flip is a serendipitous treat for any fan who has been following his career since the beginning. This is old-school GRiZ: basement-dwelling, sample-chopping GRiZ, back when “funkstep” was a legitimate genre tag on SoundCloud.
“Super classic, super throwback OG GRiZ vibes on this,” he said in an Instagram Story.
With textured bass glissading through a languid glitch hop beat, the beloved saxophonist and electronic music producer channels the weightless, walk-on-air energy of Michael Jordan in that iconic 1996 film. Meanwhile, he flexes his sampling roots by chopping up the hook from Three 6 Mafia’s “Stay Fly” and lacing a verse from Clipse’s “When the Last Time” to add some Southern rap flavor to the mix.
You can listen to GRiZ’s new rework of “Fly Like an Eagle” below. The track is also available to stream on SoundCloud.
