Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails Swap Drummers

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but two bands have effectively traded their drummers to each other. Today may be the trade deadline in the MLB, but forget your shortstops and starting pitchers — starting today Josh Freese takes Nine Inch Nails’ Ilan Rubin’s place and vice versa.

It’s not unlike the time Slipknot, Suicidal Tendencies, and Sepultura all swapped drummers, leading Jay Weinberg, Eloy Casagrande, and Greyson Nekrutman to end up where they’re at today. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rubin was selected to fill in the vacancy within the Foo Fighters lineup after 16 years behind the kit for Nine Inch Nails, leading him to let frontman Trent Reznor that he’d taken on a job drumming elsewhere. It’s unclear at this moment, however, if Rubin’s spot on the Foo Fighters is a full-time permanent gig or just as a touring fill-in while they hunt for their permanent replacement.

As for Freese, he’d been let go a couple weeks ago. He was originally chosen to play for the Foo Fighters after a lengthy search for a new drummer following the untimely demise of the late Taylor Hawkins.

All of this, of course, is taking place before Nine Inch Nails gets back out on the road for their Peel It Back Northern American Tour on August 6. Foo Fighters also have plans to go out on tour starting October 2 for a number of dates in Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, and Mexico City.
