Putting a country spin on a holiday classic.
The leaves are falling, the nights are getting chilly, and some parts of the nation are already seeing snow on the ground. While we have yet to celebrate Thanksgiving, many Americans are putting up their Christmas trees and holiday decor, getting ready for the next big holiday, Christmas.
While I’m not one to play Christmas music until Thanksgiving has passed, there are some exceptions, and this latest country Christmas release falls into that exception category.
Zach Top already got the holiday spirit going by releasing a stunning cover of “Blue Christmas.” Top previously released “Blue Christmas” as an Apple Music exclusive, so some fans might already be familiar with the twangs Top laid down in this song. But for the rest of us non-Apple users, this release was like Christmas day as Top dropped it as a new single.
Another country music powerhouse is laying down another Christmas classic, with Miss Ella Langley teaming up with Luke Bryan for a “Winter Wonderland” cover. The two teased that something was “coming soon” earlier this week and did not wait long before officially announcing and dropping the single.
“Winter Wonderland” was written in 1934 by Felix Bernard and lyricist Richard Bernhard Smith, and it is a classic holiday song that romanticizes cold weather and snow-covered grounds.
Since its writing, “Winter Wonderland” has been a staple, with over 200 recorded covers, including many country versions. Country artists who have put their spin on the song include George Strait, Sara Evans, Lady A, Darius Rucker, Reba McEntire, and, most recently, Luke Bryan and Ella Langley.
This duet for Langley adds to her stellar year and to her list of collaborations this year, which spans from Noah Cyrus and BigXthatPlug to Hardy.
Bryan and Langley took a classic approach for their rendition of the tune, keeping the jazz-focused melody while adding a country flair. The steel guitar humming in your ears makes you want to cozy up with a cup of hot cocoa by the fire as you hear their twangy vocals ring through the speakers.
“Sleigh bells ring, are you listening?
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight
Walking in a winter wonderland
Gone away is the bluebird
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song as we go along (Ooh)
Walking in a winter wonderland”
While I must admit, I did not have an Ella Langley and Luke Bryan duet on my bingo card for the year, this is a pleasant surprise. Of course, Langley is a powerhouse vocalist and is quickly on the way to becoming the next big female artist, and Bryan has a laundry list of hits, but given that his sound tends to be more pop country, the contrast between their sounds makes this duet surprising.
Sonically, these two vocals pair flawlessly together. The thick twangs of their Alabama and Georgia accents make their singing voices a match made in heaven, and it’s fun to hear both artists’ vocals sing this timeless tune.
If you’re looking to get into the holiday spirit, turn this one all the way up:
