Why sit down and write your own farewell letter when artificial intelligence could do it for you?

Whether we like it or not, AI is sneaking more and more into our daily lives. I’ve personally never used it (I’m probably in the minority), but I know a lot of people that have utilized programs like ChatGPT to help them with searches, questions, and finalizing written material.

Funny enough… college football fans may have collectively witnessed artificial intelligence helping a power five coach using artificial intelligence to write their farewell statement after being fired from his job.

The Auburn Tigers finally reached a breaking point with their head coach, Hugh Freeze, after the Tigers lost to the Kentucky Wildcats 10-3 this past Saturday. Freeze was already on the hot seat prior to the loss, so the writing was on the wall for the Tigers to move on, and that they did (one internet sleuth broke the firing news early when they noticed Freeze’s standing Sunday tee time at Auburn’s golf course was canceled).

Auburn athletic director John Cohen announced that the Tigers and Freeze had decided to part ways on Sunday:

“I have informed Coach Freeze of my decision to make a change in leadership with the Auburn Football program. Coach Freeze is a man of integrity, and we are appreciative of his investment in Auburn and his relentless work over the last three years in bolstering our roster. Our expectations for Auburn Football are to annually compete for championships and the search for the next leader of Auburn Football begins immediately.”

Freeze had led the Auburn Tigers since 2022, and had a contract to serve as the head coach for Auburn for six years. Because he was fired before he fulfilled the entirety of that contract, he’ll now be owed just shy of $16 million. Just another example that one of the best jobs in the world is a fired college football coach.

Freeze had 15 wins and 19 losses during his time at Auburn, and went 6-16 in SEC Conference play. His tenure didn’t go as Freeze or Auburn planned it, but Hugh’s farewell message to Auburn fans certainly made it seem like he was incredibly grateful for his time as the Tigers head coach:

“As I reflect on my time here at Auburn, I’m filled with gratitude and humility. Serving as the head football coach at this incredible university has been one of the greatest honors of my career. From the moment I arrived on The Plains, I felt the warmth, passion, and unwavering support that make Auburn truly special.

This community is built on tradition, integrity, and a deep love for one another – values that have guided me throughout my journey. Whether it was the roar of Jordan-Hare Stadium on a Saturday night, the quiet moments walking through campus, or the countless conversations with fans, alumni, and students, I’ve been reminded time and again of what it means to be part of the Auburn Family.

To our players – thank you for your commitment, your heart, and your belief in the process and fight that you have shown each week. Watching you grow as athletes and men has been the most rewarding part of this job. To our staff – no one will ever know your tireless work behind the scenes but thank you for fighting for Auburn every day. And to our fans – your passion fuels us. You’ve stood by us through every high and low, and your loyalty never wavers.

I humbly ask you to continue to fully support these student-athletes as they seek to finish the season strong under Coach Durkin’s leadership. It’s my fervent belief that great days are ahead for the Auburn football program. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this chapter. l love this place, and I’ll carry the friendships with me always. War Eagle and God Bless.”

Beautiful words from Hugh Freeze, right?

Well… some fans were quick to notice that the message seemed to be AI-generated. With artificial intelligence still in its early stages, one of the telltale signs that something is AI-written is the presence of plentiful dash marks. When you read through Freeze’s messages, there are plenty of those marks.

Some online also ran the statement through AI-detector programs, and a number of social media users responded to Freeze’s post with screenshots of the AI-generated match percentage that the text triggered. To be fair, I’m not entirely sure how accurate those supposed “AI Detectors” are, but to the naked eye, this certainly fits the AI bill.

Work smarter (and collect your $16 million buyout), not harder, eh?The post Did Recently-Fired Auburn Head Coach, Hugh Freeze, Use ChatGPT To Write His Farewell Statement? Fans Sure Think So… first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
