Match Preview
Declan Rice, a lynchpin for Arsenal, scored two more direct free kicks in 12 minutes than Kylian Mbappe has in his whole senior career. Mbappe and his Real Madrid teammates received the largest portion of the modest pie in North London.
Rice scored two spectacular dead-ball goals to end Arsenal's three-year-long drought of direct free kicks, making him the first player to ever score multiple free kicks in a Champions League knockout match. Mikel Merino, the emergency number nine, then ignited Emirates euphoria for a third time.
Jude Bellingham freely acknowledged at full time that Arsenal could have easily destroyed the 15-time European champions by more if Thibaut Courtois hadn't been playing at his best. However, as supporters of Manchester City and Chelsea are all too aware, Champions League nights at the Bernabeu are never guaranteed.
However, Arsenal plans to maintain their slim prospects of winning both the Premier League and the UCL before trying to avoid a Real Madrid comeback. Last weekend, they narrowly lost to Liverpool with a 1-1 draw against Everton, which came before the Reds' unexpected 3-2 loss to Fulham.
However, with seven games left, an 11-point deficit is undoubtedly too great for Arsenal to overcome, as Arteta's lineup at Goodison Park indicated. Nevertheless, with a 10-point lead over Manchester City in sixth place, the Gunners can consider their legitimate Champions League spot virtually guaranteed.
Given that many Gooners consigned their team to another "what if" campaign a few weeks ago, the outcome of Saturday's derby may prove inconsequential, and a Brentford squad comfortably positioned in mid-table also has little to stake.
Thomas Frank's team has been unable to contend for the top seven this season due to prolonged inconsistency. Following last weekend's admirable draw with Chelsea, their rivals from West London, the Bees have only won one of their previous five Premier League games.
As the Bees' incredible losing streak reached nine games, Brentford had a gilt-edged chance to steal the show through Sepp van den Berg, but the Dutch defender mishandled his header from a few yards out. Mark Flekken was forced to make a number of key stops.
Frank's team has fallen to 12th place in the standings, nine points behind seventh-place Aston Villa but only three points outside of a coveted top-half position after losing to Newcastle United on April 2 for the first time in seven away games.
Brentford hasn't won three points against Arsenal since 1938, though, and the Gunners' 3-1 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium on New Year's Day put them seven games clear of Frank's team since the Bees' historic first Premier League victory in August 2021.
