Former NASCAR Driver, Kenny Wallace, Offers His Thoughts On What Might Have Gone Wrong With Greg Biffle’s Plane
Former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace has his own, educated theory about what happened to Greg Biffle’s plane.
It was back on December 18 that the world lost NASCAR legend Greg Biffle. We’re still waiting for more information to become available, but what we do know is that Biffle and six others – his wife, Cristina Grossu; their 5-year old son Ryder; his 14-year old daughter (from a previous marriage) Emma; Dennis Dutton and his son, Jack; and Craig Wadsworth – passed away after a private Cessna Citation II with tail number N257BW crashed just minutes after taking off from the Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina.
According to flight tracking data, the plane took off at around 10:06 AM eastern time, and just minutes later, it turned back towards the airport to attempt an emergency landing. As to who was flying the plane, that is unclear. Three passengers onboard – including Biffle himself – were licensed pilots. It’s truly a tragic situation, and everyone is still waiting for answers and insight into what might have caused the plane to crash.
Another retired NASCAR driver has talked to enough people to make an educated guess about what went wrong.
Kenny Wallace took to his YouTube channel to give his thoughts on the matter in a video titled “Here’s What I Think Happened To Greg Biffle’s Plane.” He was very careful to keep things speculative, and stated “here’s what I think” and “this is my opinion” multiple times throughout his monologue. After all, the NASCAR community is still awaiting an official update from the actual investigation.
Wallace says that the “smart people that he talks to” have led him to believe that Biffle’s plane lost an engine, and ended up having too much drag to overcome, as he explained:
“I think the plane took off, I think they lost a motor, and then, I guess it started having a lot of drag on it. In other words… yes, we know it should fly just perfectly with one motor.”
The former driver went to reference an interview with a Statesville resident who lived near the airport that said he heard Greg Biffle’s plane “screaming” as it took off and flew around the area.
Kenny Wallace believes the loud engine noise coming from the Cessna would mean that whoever was piloting the plane had gone full throttle trying to garner up enough horsepower to make it back to the runway:
“What I think happened, and once again, we don’t know what happened, and this is my disclaimer. I think they had a lot of drag on the airplane. I think the flaps were down. Now, you respond right here, we’re just having a discussion everybody. It was such a tragic loss. Everybody wants to know what happened.
I think we lost a motor. That’s where all the up and down was taking place. They decide to come back. The flaps are down, and they don’t have any horsepower. There was so much drag and they had the throttle wide open, they just didn’t make it. I think that’s what happened. They just didn’t make it to the runway.”
That might sound like an obvious explanation, but that could very well be the explanation of the crash. We’ll only know for certain when the official investigation into the accident concludes.
Wallace tried to be as respectful as possible about the incident considering the circumstances, and called the plane crash a “tragic loss of life” multiple times throughout his explanation:
“I think it was just a tragic loss of life, and that’s what I respectfully think is what happened. But you know, the landing gear was down, the flaps were down, and it didn’t have enough horsepower to get to the runway, and it was short.”
