College Football Fans Are Disgusted With The State Of The Sport After Miami QB Carson Beck’s Shocking Admission

So much for “student athletes.”

Miami quarterback Carson Beck is gearing up to try to lead the Hurricanes to a national championship tomorrow against the Indiana Hoosiers. And lucky for him, he doesn’t have to worry about balancing football with going to class – because he admitted that he doesn’t have classes anymore.

Beck is now in his sixth year of playing college football, transferring to Miami this season after spending his first 5 seasons at Georgia. And the 23-year old quarterback turned heads yesterday during a press conference with a shocking admission when asked whether he still had to attend class while preparing for the College Football Playoff national championship game, which takes place tomorrow in Miami:

“No class. I graduated two years ago. Obviously I’ve been working towards other degrees now that I’ve gotten to Miami, but these programs take a little longer than just a year to finish, so obviously I’m not enrolling again next semester so I will be done after this season.”

Beck graduated with his undergraduate degree from Georgia all the way back in 2024, and basically admitted that he enrolled in graduate classes at Miami just so he would continue to be eligible to play football. He clearly has no intention of using or completing those degrees, so he’s not enrolled for the spring semester (which started at Miami on January 12), so he doesn’t even have to go to class as he finishes out his football career.

Now, Carson Beck is currently projected to be drafted somewhere between rounds 3-6 in the 2026 NFL Draft, so it’s not exactly surprising that he doesn’t care about school or getting the degree he’s been working towards. But his admission also didn’t sit right with college football fans, who are becoming increasingly disgusted with the state of the sport:

Of course the whole pretense of the “student athlete” has pretty much been abandoned in the NIL and transfer portal era of college football. Players change schools and negotiate contracts on a yearly basis, bouncing around to whichever program will pay them the most for their services.

Players are also able to remain in college longer: There were several players this past season who entered college in 2019, the same year Joe Burrow led LSU to the national championship. (In fact, UTSA running back John Emery Jr. was a member of that Tigers team alongside Burrow – who has now been the starting quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals for six seasons).

Not only that, but with the insane amount of money being thrown at college football players, we’re seeing more and more athletes fight to stay in college as long as possible. The goal used to be to declare for the NFL Draft as soon as possible, but now there are players know their football career is over after college – and even those who DO make the NFL can often make more money through NIL than they will in the league.

It’s just another sign of the changing landscape of college football. I mean sure, “student athlete” may have always been a thinly-veiled title to appease the NCAA. (Remember when Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones said that athletes shouldn’t have to go to class because they didn’t come to “play school?”)

But now, the pretense of college football being a sport for amateur athletes who play while working towards their degree has pretty much been all but eliminated.
