’90s country star Sammy Kershaw got into quite the dicey situation at a Louisiana Airport last month.
The man behind such hits as “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful” and “Third Rate Romance” is still touring the country and bringing his music to his fans. That’s actually what he was in the middle of doing when he accidentally brought a loaded hand gun into a Lafayette, Lousiana airport back on May 28.
As you might imagine, having a loaded pistol in his baggage caused a little bit of a travel delay for the country music singer.
Kershaw was apparently catching an early flight out of the airport, and had simply forgotten that he had a gun in his bag. He was going through security when TSA flagged his bag, and soon enough, the FBI also took notice of the contents that Sammy Kershaw was traveling with in his luggage.
After the TSA found the loaded handgun, Kershaw had to stay at the airport for a bit to have a not-so-little talk with the authorities. Not much is known about how that meeting went, though based upon the statement that the country artist later released, it seems as though everything was sorted out at one point or another.
Here’s what Sammy Kershaw had to say about the incident that briefly transformed him from ’90s country singer to the Louisiana airport’s biggest threat:
“It was early, I was half-awake and clearly not thinking straight. I’ve sang songs about heartbreak and hard times but not about forgetting to check my carry-on for a loaded firearm. That’s a new one! I guess it’s safe to say I won’t be packing heat to my next show. Let this be your friendly PSA: check your bags, check ‘em twice. Let’s all stay safe out there.”
Yeah… don’t forget to check your bag for a loaded gun next time you head to the airport. Believe it or not, it’s a fairly common accident. Even country music’s Scotty McCreery found himself in that predicament a handful of years ago.
Kershaw was hit with a $5,000 fine, which is honestly getting let off easy. He could have been fined for an amount upwards of $10,000, and bringing a loaded gun to an airport can also obviously lead to being arrested and facing jail time. Seems like the “Love of My Life” singer caught a bit of a break… and must have been pretty good about smoothing things over with the TSA and FBI.
Will we ever get a song from Sammy Kershaw that encapsulates this scary and somewhat self inflicted incident that he went through? That would certainly be something. If I were him, I’d just want to get past the whole “I accidentally took a firearm to the airport” thing fairly quickly. No need to rehash it, especially if he only had to pay a $5,000 fine when things could have ended up a lot worse.
I’m sure being a ’90s country music star helped soften the blow. I imagine when the authorities at the airport started asking questions, Kershaw insisted that he was harmless by cueing up “Queen of My Double Wide Trailer.” Nothing lowers tension with airport security more than a classic country song, am I right?
